Innovation plays a critical role in the mining and minerals industry as a tool to improve the efficiency of its processes, to reduce costs, but also to meet the increasing social and environmental concerns among communities and authorities.
The role of innovation in the industry extends to questions of energy – be they related to energy efficiency, emissions reductions, clean generation of electricity, sources of process heat, decarbonization, the transition to alternative energy systems, and even how do we produce more minerals to meet the needs of the green economy (renewable energy sources are more material intensive than traditional fossil-fuel-based systems).
This year’s Let’s Talk Minerals features three energy leaders who will address how the industry and its partners in Saskatchewan have and may respond to the energy challenges of today and tomorrow.
Sara Harrison, Head of Directional Studies, Potash – BHP – “How energy considerations will help make Jansen one of the world’s largest and most sustainable potash mines”
Brett Paquin, Director, Energy Security, Crown Energy Security Division – Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) – “How the Government of Saskatchewan is advancing consideration of small modular reactors as a clean energy source for the province”
Guy Lonechild, Chief Executive Officer – First Nations Power Authority – “How Indigenous communities and businesses can play an important role in providing clean energy sources – wind, solar, small modular reactors and hydrogen, and partnership opportunities for industry as well as First Nation and Métis communities”
