IMII – Working to expand the technological base for clean power and heat in the minerals industry
The IMII is the innovation supporting network for Saskatchewan’s minerals industry, including its world class potash industry. Since 2021, IMII has been part of the industry’s efforts in finding low carbon solutions to meet its energy needs, and such efforts have included finding and developing innovative new technologies that could be brought into use.

Saskatchewan exploring the potential for carbon capture and storage hubs for minerals and power production
In October 2023, the International Minerals Innovation Institute (IMII) announced, in association with the Government of Saskatchewan, that a collaborative study was underway exploring the potential for carbon capture and storage (CCS) hubs anchored by minerals and power production. A CCS hub is a deep geological reservoir where CO2 emissions captured from one or more industrial facilities may be permanently stored. They are served by pipelines that transport captured carbon to the hub, and strategically built hubs could provide a pathway for reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from both potash and power production.
